Occupational Therapy assists people of all ages (pediatric to geriatric) to participate in their daily living routine (eating, dressing, play, bathing, laundry, cleaning, etc) as independently and safely as possible. If an acute or chronic illness or injury has made your daily living routine difficult, OT will help you relearn/improve/compensate for the physical or mental impairments.
Your Initial evaluation with the occupational therapist will last about 1 hour. You will have the opportunity to talk with your OT about your symptoms, diagnosis, your health history and how your symptoms interfere with your daily life, work and recreational activities. Then, your OT will examine your physical and/or cognitive function impairments through assessments and tests. Based on this information, you and your OT will discuss the results and develop goals/a treatment plan that is individualized for you. The rest of your inital OT visit will be focusing on education/home exercise program for you to be able to complete/implement between now and the next regular OT visit.
